Early Morning French Toast

I made French Toast for the first time this morning! I was kind of worried because I had big shoes to fill. Growing up my mom made some mean french toast; I loved it! So I was shocked when Nick said he loved the sweet pieces of toast because I certainly did not think they measured up to my mom's recipe.... these slices of bread did not even look familiar; tt could be a combination of never making french toast and also just pure insecurity.

Here is what you will need:

  • 3 eggs
  • 1 cup milk or half and half
  • 2 to 3 tablespoons honey
  • 1/4 cup brown sugar
  • pinch of salt
  • 6 pieces of bread [preferably thick pieces...unfortunately I only had regular white bread]
  • 4 tablespoons butter
  • in a microwave safe bowl combine honey and brown sugar, heat in microwave for 20 seconds
  • combine melted honey, brown sugar, milk, salt and eggs together
  • in large skillet on medium - low heat melt a tablespoon of butter for every piece or two of bread
  • coat each side of bread in mixture
  • place in skillet and heat a couple of minutes on each side, until golden brown
  • top each with a sprinkle of brown sugar
  • serve with whatever you like, whipped cream, syrup, fruit, etc
Nick said the flavor of the french toast was too good to ruin with syrup. While I think he is slightly biased he insisted that it was the best french toast he had EVER eaten. It was the highest compliment ever, but again I'm not too convinced. I'm quite critical of my cooking!! I hope you all give this recipe a try, it is definitely good and well worth getting up early to make on a cold morning before work!!

Until next time, happy French Toasting!  :)
