Homemade Parmesan and Herb Crackers

There is nothing better than having some crackers to crumble into your soup or eat along with a good bowl of soup! I thought about making croutons, but this was not the right soup for that! Therefore, I decided to make Homemade Crackers! They are very good and perfect in a good bowl of soup!

 

 

Here are the ingredients you will need:

 

  • 1 1/4 cup flour
  • 1 tablespoon salt
  • 3 teaspoons shortening
  • 3 ounces of milk
  • Parmesan and Herbs*
*I added this because I thought it would add great flavor - I was right! In reality, you can omit this or add a particular spice you want your crackers to taste like! The cracker world is yours to experiment with! 
Directions:
  • Preheat oven to 350
  • Combine first two ingredients
  • Using a fork or food processor, cut in the shortening
  • Add milk starking with 2 ounces [1/4 cup], only using the remainder if necessary
  • You are looking for a stiff dough that forms into a ball but is not sticky or wet
  • Roll out to about 1/8 inch on a lightly floured surface
  • Cut into squares or whatever funky shape you choose [I used a pizza cutter and went with diamond-like shapes]
  • Using a fork, poke holes in the dough
  • Sprinkle with salt and any other spice you like and bake for 10 to 12 minutes or until golden brown and crunchy
    • just a note, my crackers were a little thicker than 1/8 inch and took about 20 minutes to cook to my liking. I also flipped them half-way through the process
  • Store in an airtight container
    • at this point I added my parmesan and herb flavors and shook the crackers around in the container, making sure all crackers were coated. It worked well for me!!
These are such a simple thing to make and pair nicely with soup! However, you could easily add cheese to them and serve as an appetizer or anything else your heart desires! Crackers are kind of versatile like that!!
