Balsamic Steak & Potato Phyllo Pockets

Happy Thursday foodies! Lately Nick and I have been addicted to HGTV. I think it is because we are in the infancy of our home search and watching people go through the same thing is comforting. However, we also like watching shows like Property Virgins, House Hunters, Yard Crashers, etc. because all of those shows give us ideas of what to expect when it comes to remodeling, what to look for in houses and the important stuff that people like that make houses lucrative for resale.

Unlike other couples, Nick and I really know what we want and I don’t think we are being too picky; in fact, I do not even think our realtor finds us picky.


We have been watching HGTV for over a month, it’s our go-to channel most weekends. Nick LOVES that because he is spared of all of my favorite addictions on BravoTv. He hates that an intellectual mind like mine is addicted to a slew of shows like The Real Housewives, Jesery Shore, Kardashians, and Teen Mom. I cannot help it. I find it all very entertaining.

Long story short: Nick is happy to watch HGTV and I am happy that he does not groan when I turn it on.

I cannot wait to buy a house. I am looking forward to a fabulous kitchen with lots of room. I know I will be absolutely inspired; kind of like I was last night. I hit dinner out of the park. Nick kept saying it over and over again. I made a few things last night, all of which was wildly popular Nick really liked the side that I made {which I DID NOT TAKE PICTURES OF!}


So I will recreate it this weekend to blog about next week, hopefully.  But fear not, I still have a delicious recipe for you today. Take a look at these Steak and Potato Phyllo Pockets.

  • 1 potato
  • 8 phyllo dough sheets
  • 3.5 ounces steak, sliced thin
  • 3 tablespoons Balsamic Vinaigrette
  • ¼ cup onion, chopped
  • 2.1 ounces cheese {your choice}, shredded


  • Preheat oven to 375 degrees F.
  • Generously coat a cookie sheet with cooking spray, set aside
  • Slice your potato into ¼ inch thick pieces. Over medium-high heat, boil your potato pieces until they are fork tender. Drain and set aside.
  • In a medium sized skillet over medium heat, add the balsamic vinaigrette and onions. Sauté the onions in the balsamic vinaigrette for about 6 minutes, or until translucent.
  • Add the sliced steak to the balsamic and onion reduction. Make sure to thoroughly coat the steak with the balsamic vinaigrette. Add another tablespoon if you need to.  Cook for about 5 minutes or until the steak is cooked to your liking.
  • Now we must assemble. Carefully take 2 phyllo dough sheets and lay it flat {horizontally} on a slightly moistened area of your counter. {Don’t go over board with the water!}
  • Take 2 of the potato slices and place next to each other on the bottom
  • Sprinkle with a tablespoon or so of cheese
  • Top with the balsamic steak and onion reduction
  • Now, carefully fold the two longest ends. I folded each twice. You want the phyllo sheets to be folded so they are touching the steak and everything in the middle.

  • Do the same with the sides – I folded them closer to 3 or 4 times.
  • Repeat with the other phyllo sheets, potato & steak
  • Remove to the greased baking sheet
  • Bake at 375 degrees for about 15 to 20 minutes, or until the phyllo sheets are lightly golden on top
  • Remove and ENJOY!!

These little phyllo pockets are absolutely delicious. The combination of steak, potato and cheese with a balsamic reduction is an incredible blend of flavors! It was hard not to gobble it all up when I was cooking. Do yourself a favor and make these!
